WHAT IS AN INCOME TAX RETURN?

An ITR is more than just a tax-payment form

An Income Tax Return, commonly called an ITR, is a return filed with the Income Tax Department to report relevant income, deductions, taxes paid, tax liability and other required information for the applicable year.

Depending on the taxpayer and income profile, the return may include salary or pension income, house-property income, business or professional income, capital gains, interest, dividends and other taxable income. The applicable form depends on the taxpayer's circumstances and the rules for the relevant assessment year.

Filing an accurate return can also help maintain a clear tax record. It may be relevant when applying for a loan, visa, financial product or other situation where proof of income or tax compliance is requested.

Important: ITR filing is not simply about entering the number shown on Form 16. Other income, deductions, capital gains, interest income, TDS and information available in tax records should also be reviewed before filing.
WHY FILE AN ITR?

When filing your return becomes important

Whether filing is mandatory depends on the taxpayer's circumstances and applicable provisions. In other cases, people may still file because an ITR provides a useful formal record of income and taxes.

01

Report Taxable Income

Use the return to report income from applicable sources and calculate the final tax position according to the relevant rules.

02

Claim Eligible Refund

If taxes paid or deducted exceed the final tax liability, an eligible taxpayer may claim the resulting refund through the return.

03

Carry Eligible Losses

Certain losses can be carried forward when the applicable conditions are satisfied and the return is filed within the required framework.

04

Maintain Income Record

Filed returns can provide an organised record of reported income and taxes for future financial and compliance requirements.

05

Support Financial Applications

ITRs may be requested as income documentation by lenders, financial institutions, visa authorities or other organisations.

06

Stay Tax Compliant

Where filing is required, submitting the return correctly and within the applicable deadline helps meet the taxpayer's filing obligation.

WHICH ITR FORM?

Understand the main ITR forms before you start

The correct ITR form depends on the taxpayer's residential status, income sources, business or professional activity, asset profile and other applicable conditions.

1

ITR-1

For eligible resident individuals meeting the prescribed conditions, including specified salary or pension, house-property and other-source income. For AY 2026–27, the department's guidance includes a total-income limit of ₹50 lakh and specified conditions for eligible income sources.

Form selection matters: Do not select an ITR form only because you are salaried or because someone else used that form. Check all your income sources and the current assessment-year eligibility conditions first.

Keep your tax records organised before opening the ITR form

A smooth filing process starts with collecting information rather than entering numbers immediately. The exact documents required depend on your income sources and tax situation.

Salaried taxpayers may need salary and TDS information, while investors may need capital-gains statements. People with house-property income may need rent and interest details, and business or professional taxpayers may need books, financial records and other relevant information.

COMMON ITR MISTAKES

Errors to check before you submit your return

Many filing problems happen because information is incomplete rather than because the taxpayer intentionally reports something incorrectly. A final review can help identify mismatches before submission.

!
Missing interest income Bank and deposit interest can be overlooked when taxpayers focus only on salary.
!
Ignoring capital gains Share, mutual-fund and other investment transactions may need separate reporting.
!
Not checking AIS / 26AS Compare available tax information with your own records before filing.
!
Wrong bank details Review the bank account selected for refund and ensure the details are correct.
!
Incorrect deduction claim Claim only deductions for which you satisfy the applicable eligibility conditions.
!
Forgetting verification Uploading the return is not the end of the process; complete verification within the applicable period.
AFTER FILING

What happens after you submit your ITR?

Filing your return starts the processing stage. Your next steps should include verification and keeping the acknowledgement and supporting records safely.

e-Verification

After uploading your return, complete the applicable verification process. The Income Tax Department currently states a 30-day timeline for e-verification or submission of ITR-V from the date of filing.

Do not leave verification pending. Delayed verification can affect the date treated as the furnishing date and may lead to applicable late-filing consequences.

Income Tax Refund

A refund can arise when the tax already paid or deducted is higher than the final tax liability determined from the return. Refund processing depends on the return and the department's processing.

Keep your bank information accurate and review the refund-related details entered in your return.
